Traffic! Stress! Too Many Bills! Pressure at Work! Appointments! Family Tensions! Loud Neighbors! Flat Tires! Illness!
Are you tired of the never-ending grind?
Is the relentless hustle and bustle of everyday life wearing you down?
Sometimes it's all just too much, isn't it?
Do you want to get away from it all?
There is a way?
Imagine breathtaking views of landscapes untouched by strip malls and highways.
Picture a place where your closest neighbors are ducks and geese, fish and raccoons, and even bears and wolves-if you're lucky.
Visualize a relaxing scene filled with deep greens, beautiful flora, and amazing views.
Are you feeling the stress melt away yet? If you are, then I want to talk to you about an activity that changed my life and can easily change yours as well.
Canoeing.
Yes, that's right; canoeing. Once reserved for summer camp kids and rugged outdoorsmen, canoeing is quickly becoming the newest "Get Away From It All" activity of the 21st century.
Perhaps it's the joy of skimming over the water. Or the feeling of freedom. Maybe it's the connection to nature. Or the social aspects-passing wonderful fair days in the company of friends and family. Whatever it is, something about canoeing seems to heal the rips and tears of modern life. Once you're on the water, your problems often melt away.
Canoeing slows us down and allows us to embrace what's real: the irrepressible natural world. And ourselves. For many paddlers I've heard from, canoeing exists as a form of meditation. The discipline involved in executing a good stroke over and over, hundreds of times an hour-such repetition can cleanse your mind of all the stresses and problems of everyday life as it recharges your batteries and helps you to see the world in a brand new way.
In fact, once you've seen the world through "paddler's eyes," you may never look at it in the same way again. I know I haven't.
When I began paddling years ago, I had just about had it up to here with the frenetic pace of my life. When a friend introduced me to canoeing, I was pretty skeptical at first. But, believe me; within minutes of being away from the asphalt jungle, I could feel my whole body relaxing. The barrage of phones and cars and questions and bills and all of it washed away within mere moments.
It was amazing, really. After just one short day of canoeing, I was hooked. I was convinced. I was converted. Whatever you want to call it, that's what I was. Canoeing was the answer!
Now, many years later, I want to share my love of canoeing with you. After paddling across some of the most beautiful lakes in the world, I decided I wanted to offer my knowledge and experiences with you so you can catch the high of the canoeing buzz. After cruising down the most exhilarating rivers, the feel of whitewater still upon me, I decided it was time to show you what wonders canoeing had to offer.
I wrote Canoeing 101: Basic Guide for Canoeing in Lakes and Rivers as a way to open the world of canoeing to everyday people. People who otherwise might never have the opportunity to learn how easy and inexpensive it is to get involved in this activity or know about all the incredible benefits canoeing can offer you with every stroke of your paddle.
Canoeing 101 is filled with page after page with everything you need to know (and more) to get started paddling today. Drawing from my own personal experiences as well as the collective experience of some of today's best paddlers, I've created a book that outlines each step of the canoeing process for you–from gear, to lessons, to where to go, and everything in between.
Canoeing 101: Basic Guide for Canoeing in Lakes and Rivers is my small way of sharing my love of canoeing with you. But, it's more than just that. Canoeing 101 is 80+ pages of information that will not only educate, but inspire you; will not only equip you with the best advice and recommendations, but will also motivate you to begin living the life you've always imagined, but haven't quite grabbed a hold of yet.
Reading Canoeing 101 has given me great motivation to get back into canoeing as I have not done it for many years and remembered how much I loved it.
"Canoeing 101" outlines the real adventures and fun that you can have whilst canoeing. The book not only reveals the skills and techniques that you need to canoe well, but also describes the enjoyment, relaxation and feeling of freedom that you get from being outdoors and skimming along the beautiful and peaceful rivers and lakes.
So thanks Rob, for writing this book, I have really enjoyed reading it and would like to recommend anyone who is interested in Canoeing or wants to get started to act now and buy 101 Canoeing!!

Canoeing: It's About Getting Back Even If You've Never Been Before
If you are among the lucky, you might have fond memories of the dented aluminum canoes of summer camps long gone. You might remember what it is to glide across the center of a sparkling lake, a lust for the spray of whitewater foam across your reddening cheeks.
For many, however, who grew up far from lakes and rivers, canoeing often falls into the category of outdoors sports that seem distant and mysterious, like other such activities as hiking, camping, and rock climbing. For these folks, canoeing is for hardy people living in exotic, rustic places like Vermont, Oregon, or Tennessee, but not for New Yorkers, or rust-belt suburbanites, or landlocked folk from Iowa.
The time has come for your perception to change. Most people have excellent canoeing locations within one hour's drive of their home. Canoeing is very inexpensive. And, canoeing is a great sport for people of all shapes, sizes, and physical conditions.
With the hustle and bustle of everyday life showing no signs of slowing up, there's just simply no better time to start canoeing than now. In Canoeing 101: Basic Guide for Canoeing in Lakes and Rivers you'll see how simple it is to start today.

Canoeing 101: Basic Guide for Canoeing in Lakes and Rivers Was Written For You
On that first canoeing trip, I learned that canoeing is for everyday people just like me and you. Over the years, I have learned that canoeing is just about the perfect outdoor activity and here are some of the reasons why:
It's generally harder to get lost in a canoe than on a hike.
Rivers and lakes are easier to see your way out of.
If you suffer from joint, strength, or fitness problems, canoeing offers an easier way to travel and exercise than say backpacking.
Because you only really need a boat, a paddle, and a personal flotation device, you don't need much gear to begin canoeing. And, since equipment is often available for free with instruction or may be rented at a very affordable price on many lakes or rivers, it's as easy as 1, 2, 3.
Because the basics can be learned in an afternoon, canoeing does not demand a high level of skill or physical ability.
What Canoeing 101 Can Do for You: Weight Loss to Cardio!
For those of you who need an outdoor sport that gets results, you might be surprised to learn that canoeing burns calories. For a 150-pound person, light recreational canoeing burns 200-225 calories an hour. This is comparable to what's used up while easy bicycling, bowling, or dancing (slow ballroom). However, once you increase the pace, the metabolic rate begins to spike. Moderate canoeing burns about 500 calories an hour. This is on par with touch football, vigorous calisthenics, competitive badminton, or high-impact aerobics. And, what's best: All these benefits come from a sitting position with very little stress on the joints and muscles of the lower body, or the spine.
But, the physical benefits don't stop there. Vigorous canoe paddling, racing, or crewing burns 850 calories an hour. This is similar to the rate for boxing, racing on bicycles or cross-country skis, squash, and long-distance running.
Aside from weight loss, canoeing also provides tremendous cardiovascular and upper-body benefits. Few activities can provide such an intense workout for people with serious leg or foot problems. And doesn't gliding down a cool, green-canopied river sound like a much better route to trim and toned arms than barbells and a mind-numbing DVD?
Your abdominal muscles will also get a tightening workout from all the torso-twisting that goes into every stroke. Spending an hour on a river can be equivalent to a few hundred, or even thousands, stomach crunches. Can you picture the results?
And, of course, canoeing is a great way to reduce stress. An easy paddle across a sun-dappled lake is the natural enemy of all life's stressors. Although any kind of exercise can relax, and thus lower your stress rate there's just something about canoeing that seems to double the effect.

Canoeing Just Can't be beat?
After years of canoeing, I've learned that there's no better social activity than gathering a few of your friends or loved ones on a flat lake or a cool, deep river. The camaraderie generated by mutual effort, the relaxing feel of water against paddle, the quiet time to talk and laugh, the sun and lazy outdoor feel-all serve to make people feel connected to one another. And, that's why we spend time with others, right?
With canoeing, the experiences don't end in the boat. Many activities are complemented by canoeing. Photography, traveling, bird-watching, camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, and even diving can all be enhanced through the use of a canoe.
But, I'm Not the Outdoors Type- Could Canoeing Really Be For Me?
Some of you might be saying "Oh, I could never do something like that. I'm not an outdoorsy type of person." Nine times out of ten, however, after you put that paddle into the water for the very first time, you'll discover you really are "outdoorsy."
It's a fact. Human beings have an innate love for the natural world. But, for reasons of fear, apprehension, and inexperience, many people simply give up on the outdoors because no one ever showed them how to "do" it.
It's for these people, that I wrote Canoeing 101. For those of you who never really imagined yourself in a self-propelled boat, splashing down a river or across a lake, accompanied only the sun and a loon, this book was written especially for you.
Don't worry; I know it may seem daunting at first to plunge into the outdoor world-where plants and animals replace TVs and traffic jams, but without fail, that first step you take toward nature will lead to a world of inexhaustible riches in your life. It is magical.
But, if magic isn't enough, see just a few more of the amazing things you'll learn in Canoeing 101.
Find out why it's important for you to take at least one canoe course before getting started. (page 40)
Discover the best books and Web sites to help you learn more about canoeing. (page 68)
Learn about the 6 main boat types and find out which is right for you. (page 16)
Maximize your canoeing knowledge with a comprehensive annotated reading list. (page 79)
Learn what a "strainer" is and why you'll want to avoid them. (page 56)
Reveal the 8 strokes that every paddler needs to know to rule the river. (page 46)
Learn what a PFD is and why it could save your life. (page 33)
Understand how the universal paddling signals are essential to every canoe outing. (page 75)
Discover the 4 main things you need to know about every river. (page 52)
Learn what you must pay attention for on lakes to make your canoe trip the best it can be. (page 53)
Understand why knowing the difference between class, stage, and discharge will make you a pro. (page 52)
Discover secrets how to harness the energy of the river for a free ride. (page 75)
Learn what's needed to start reading rivers like an experienced outdoorsman. (page 51)
And, page after page of inspiring information to get you primed and ready to go!
Got Kids? Canoeing Is The Perfect Family Outing!
If you thought that having kids prevents you from canoeing?think again! Canoeing is the perfect family activity. Whether just a day trip or a weekend camping adventure, canoeing offers "nature benefits" that are especially important for children. There's no better way to instill a reverence for the living world than to bring your kids on a canoe trip. Each river can serve as a stealth science/history lesson. And the physical skills they learn will serve them for their entire lifetime–few sports have such a wide age range as canoeing.
What's more, getting children out into the great outdoors at an early age helps develop in them a confidence in dealing with the natural world. Exposing them to canoeing and nature at an early age increases the likelihood that they'll become active teenagers and young adults-which, if you're a parent, you know is a difficult task in the video-game/DVD/Internet-soaked society we inhabit.
Ready to Launch that Canoe?
Are you still not sure what you will find when you take that first stroke? In the canoeing world, you will definitely discover:
a place unlike any other
experiences that will challenge you body, mind, and soul
a lifelong passion that will reward you time and time again with deep feelings of accomplishment
an activity to test your skill, your courage, and your sense of adventure
unparalleled beauty as you explore the many places you can paddle
endless opportunities for nurturing your self growth and developing rich friendships with fellow canoers
personal rewards that will fill you with confidence, excitement, and exhilaration
Indeed, the list of possible rewards goes on and on, but when you begin canoeing you will assuredly discover your own reasons and rewards. The bond that you will achieve between nature, fellow paddlers, and yourself will defy your wildest expectations.
The many benefits of canoeing don't only take place when you're cruising down a river. Even as a beginner, you will quickly see how the skills and dedication that you bring to the water will accompany you throughout the rest of your day-to-day activities.
You will develop balance, both mentally and physically, that will help you to think and act with poise under pressure.
You will increase your core strengths and feel healthier, stronger, and more agile than ever before.
You will see obstacles as challenges that you can paddle through, not as end points.
You will learn how being prepared can make all the difference in the world as to whether you are successful or not.
You will understand what it is to truly trust others with the things that are most valuable to you and be able to offer this same sort of reliance to others.
You will know what steps are necessary to be successful and will approach your own life challenges in a similar step-by-step manner.
You will know what it feels like to paddle successfully and will be able to actualize this feeling elsewhere in your life.
If you are still questioning whether canoeing is right for you, ask yourself the following questions:
Do you want to feel a sense of great pride as you face and complete incredible challenges?
Do you want to increase your coordination, muscle strength, balance, and/or flexibility?
Can you imagine what it would be to find a calm and peacefulness as you immerse yourself in nature?
Do you want to have an exultant experience of "getting away from it all"?
Are you ready for a much needed aligning of body and mind?
If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, canoeing is the answer for you.
This is what canoeing IS.
That is what canoeing can DO for you.
Are you ready to canoe?
If so, we are ready and excited about helping you along on your path. Let's get you on the water and prepare you to paddle to the top of your own success.

Of course, most of us don't have a chance for such a deep connection to nature on a daily basis. We live in the city or suburbs, where nature is a shrub or weed and history is any building that's stood for more than a single generation. That's why canoeing appeals to so many these days. If you have an opportunity to get out a few times a month and dip yourself into the world of canoeing, you'll find yourself refreshed upon returning to "civilization." Perhaps you'll look at things in a different way. Instead of seeing the strip mall, perhaps you'll see the gentle creek that runs beside it. Instead of cars, maybe you'll focus on the birds and small animals trying to earn a living amongst the humans. Perhaps you'll being to see the lay of the land itself, the way it rolls and dips toward water.
This is what it means to get back to nature. You get to bring IT back with you! Canoeing offers you the best of both words at all times!
